Child Protective Services is one of the most crucial agencies within the United States Social service system. Protection of children from abuse is the primary focus of CPS. CPS is a part of all 50 states in the United States and may be called different names in different states, however, its purpose and goal are very singular. CPS looks over any cases wherein children are involved in and works towards protecting them and providing a better environment.
Their primary objective is to detect events of abuse taking place, and intervene for the protection of the children in these situations. They have the very difficult job of making certain that children and their rights are being protected from the caregivers around them and that they are being taken care of in an acceptable home environment.
CPS will get involved in situations where a child may have been abused by an adult or caregiver in their environment and take any steps necessary to remove the child from the abusive environment and provide them with a safer environment. CPS rehabilitation wherein children are taken from abusive households and are given a better environment to grow in, and it is important to protect these children and rehabilitate them so that their experiences do not become a limiter to their potential as a whole.
CPS has a very strict procedure to follow, wherein upon receiving the report, they are supposed to determine if the child has been abused or neglected in any form. They are responsible for protecting the child from any immediate danger. They also decide what kind of interventions are needed to keep the child safe and implement these steps.
The fear of CPS taking the children away is a very real fear however it is important to understand that the primary goal of CPS is providing and safeguarding the children within their homes. CPS prefers to remove the abuser from the home, and removing the children is only reserved for the most extreme of circumstances.
